What Is A Resume?
A RĂ©sumĂ© is a brief summary of your experience or professional achievement, your abilities, and your education. Your rĂ©sumĂ© should highlight your strongest skills and achievements relevant to the job for which you are applying. Â
Furthermore, your rĂ©sumĂ© is, most of the time, the recruiter’s first introduction to you as a professional. With that said, you need to make sure that your rĂ©sumĂ© makes a good first impression.Â
Top 10 Resume Tips For 2022
1. Optimize Your Resume For ATS
When you apply online for a job, the companies use a tool called ATS, which stands for Applicant Tracking Systems. It is software that allows companies to efficiently manage and track job candidates. The ATS scans your resume and determines whether you are a strong match based on keywords, titles, and degree(s) that it finds on your resume during the scanning process.
2. Use Adobe PDF File Format
You must prioritize PDF file format because it helps to keep the formatting and illustrations on your resume and more importantly, the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) scans PDF format very well. But if you use a word document file, you may not be able to keep the formatting of your resume depending on which computer they are going to utilize to open your resume.Â
3. Prioritize Active Voice
It is essential to utilize active voice on your email to communicate your professional achievement clearly. Moreover, the use of active voice is straightforward, and the structure of the sentence is easy to follow and understand.
4. Include Only Skills That Are Relevant To The Position
If you are applying for a “Technical Support Engineer” position, you should include skills like customer service, people skills, oral communication skills, detail-oriented, etc.
5. Never Lie On Your Resume
Lies are not your friends. No matter how good you are at telling lies, you should never lie about what you can or can’t do.
6. Don’t Include Personal Pronouns
You should stay away from personal pronouns. If you are tempted to do so because you think it would make more sense, just don’t do it.
7. Be Consistent In The Format And Content
Don’t be all over the place on your resume. Use one or two fonts to organize your resume. If you use a period in one of the bullet points, do the same in the other ones.
8. Always Make Sure Your Grammar Is Correct
Before you send your resume to the recruiter or before uploading it to the online application, proofread it, ask a friend or a family member to read it to you, and if necessary, edit and correct errors. This is extremely important!
9. Don’t Use Multiple Colors
It would be better to use only one color (Black) to write your resume, but if you want to use more than one color, two is the maximum number because “Simple is better.”
10. Don’t Include Your Age And Your Mailing Address
Neither your age nor your mailing address is important on a resume. So, take the extra room to write something useful and relevant. Â
